Something I wrote while in Iraq about the children growing in war
Where did your innocence go?

I know somebody stole it from you

Never having the chance to feel invincible

Growing up with blood on the streets right outside your front door

Your eyes are glazed over and a smile creeps across your face

You're going to bed tonight with someone else's blood on your hands

Where did your innocence go?

I know somebody stole it from you

You never had the chance to feel invincible

And I want to understand you

These images you will never be able to erase

They are already etched into your soul

And if you survive all of this are you really better off?

I want to save you

To restore your innocence

But I can't (I can't)

So instead I will lie here tonight

Feel your pain seep into my dreams

(Life isn't supposed to be like this)

Where did you your innocence go?

I know somebody stole it from you

You will never have the chance to feel invincible

Growing up with blood on the streets right outside your door

(This is war)

Your eyes are glazed over and a smile creeps across your face

You're going to bed tonight with someone else's blood on your hands

(My child, please wash your hands)
