This is my first poem, intended to be an extended metaphor.
The world is endless,

Like a swimming pool for the masses.

Some people can swim all day long,

Some get by on floatation devices,

The luckiest can completely avoid the water.

I lived happily near the deepest of the deep end,

Where rafters and swimmers were strong in their choices.

I always favored rafts without a doubt.

Mine always cradled me safely,

never let me touch water,

always made me feel confident.

A raft which I loved so much,

I wore it to a barely usable state.

It soon deflated over time.

Rafts shouldnʼt deflate,

They should last forever!

The raft became only a dream to me.

I still donʼt know if it was real or not.

In all the water, itʼs hard to tell.

Now Iʼm left, raft-less and unable to swim.

Iʼm drowning in my thoughts,

and have been for a quite a white.

As others wade softly,

I take in more and more water.

They pay no attention,

They have enough worry keeping themselves afloat.

I look to them,

Itʼs seems so easy!

Why canʼt I just flap my limbs and glide to the shallow end?

For once, I want to be with the simple ones.

They donʼt know the salty taste of the dark water.

The donʼt know the struggle to keep head above water.

They donʼt know because they arenʼt drowning.

To them, swimming or floating wasnʼt their big issue,

It was enjoying their choice to the fullest that mattered to them.

Maybe Iʼll leave the pool to them.
