A poem of dedication to service.
THE POLICEMAN ON PATROL

I’m the one you call on
When you are in need of help.
You expect me to have all the answers
To your problems every time, because
I’m the policemen on patrol.

I’m the one you call on
To scare some sense into your kid.
You say “He’ll put you in jail if you’re not good.”
So your child grows up in fear of me,
The policeman on patrol.

I’m the one you call on
When you’ve been victimized.
You expect me to solve the case
With the methods on TV, because
I’m the policeman on patrol.

When you are caught in violation
Why must you test my patience?
I didn’t ask you to break the law,
I’m just trying to make our world a little safer.
That’s my job.
That’s why you pay me.
That’s what you expect of me.
That’s why you teach your kids to fear me.
I’m the policeman on patrol.

And even though my goal is impossible,
And even if you won’t always help,
I’ll be out there somewhere in the street
Doing your dirty work and expecting no thanks.
I’ll try to make your world a little safer, because
I’m the policeman on patrol.

The policeman on patrol.
So much is expected of him.
So little is thought of him.
Perfection is sought of him.
But fear and distrust is felt for…
The policeman on patrol.
