Dancing Alone

I built my world around you but you didn't give a damn.
It's the way you acted darlin' that made me what I am.
If you'd put your arms around me and sometimes held me tight,
I might still have been there with you to hold you through the night.

You treated me like something that you'd walked in on your shoe.
You made me feel so small and weak. Not a good thing to do.
If you'd treated me with kindness and shown a little heart,
We might still have been together.  Instead we're torn apart.

Takes two to tango darlin' but I always danced alone.
While you took other partners, I was dancing on my own.
When you took me to the limit; t'was more than I could stand.
I told you it was over and returned your wedding band.

There's a small place inside me that forever will be yours.
It's locked away beyond the reach of our domestic wars
And a lifetime will not alter the future or the past.
I only wish we'd had the strength to make our loving last.
