Susan

I hear a scream from Susan's room
in the middle of the night,
I'm up the stairs into the gloom,
consumed by darkest fright.

I try to find a trace of her,
she's nowhere to be found,
a gentle breeze that is astir,
slips in without a sound.

It leads me to the window sill
and a brilliant crimson stain,
then all the courage and the will
from my body quickly drain.

Sirens in the distance wail
surreal is this dream,
police arrive; their faces pale
when they hear a mother's scream.

Suddenly the screaming's through,
then I sadly realize
never will I look into
my daughter's loving eyes.
