They stole my dreams away...

First Love

He came, my own true love.
The beating of my heart
became intense.
We were not meant to part.

'Just a fleeting phase'
That's all that they could say.
'Get over it'
They stole my dreams away.

'It will never last'
You're much too young to care'

They never knew
that what we had was rare.

How my frail heart bled
but what was there to say?
The rules were theirs,
they called the state of play.

They held the upper hand.
Indifferent to me,
they locked my world
and threw away the key.

Daylight stole my flesh.
The darkness stole my sleep.
Loss stole my mind.
The love I buried deep.

Age has benefit
and as I contemplate
what might have been,
I find no room for hate.

Time hurtles ever on
and all that's past is done.
Don't grasp to tight.
Let go or they'll have won.

Here, within my heart
where memories don't die
I'll keep him close,
remember him and sigh.
