Poem about the relationship between myself and my dog.
I lay my head upon your side
feel you breathing
in and out
in and out

your chest rises and I remember
back when I was a child
and this was our constant occupation
laying and breathing
in and out
in and out

I would try to match my breath to yours
mine always much shorter
the folly of youth I suppose
but you breathed deeply and held that air
waiting for the fullness to set in
before expelling it back out
in and out
in and out

now I have grown
and you have grown older
we still lay side by side
and I place my head upon your flank once again
back to our old game
breathing
in and out
in and out

time passes but this will always remain
I curl up against your side and realize
yours is the body that fits mine
we breath the same air
have the same heart beat
share one soul
in and out
in and out

still never rushed
you breath beats against the carpet
and mine mingles with your hair
still rash in tempo
but getting closer
in and out
in and out

the world spins around us
but your rhythm never changes
it's always
in and out
in and out

someday you will leave
and my side will be bare
my body uncoupled
my heart without a companion
but I will always remember
and keep that rhythm
inside of me forever

in and out
in and out
always just
in and out
in and out
