A poem about the true horror of war. Tragic and emotional...my heart is in this.
Wake up before the sun
There is a battle to be won
Slam a clip in your M-16
Grab some chow; it's only beans
Stomachs growling, eyes are blurry
Strap on that pack; we're in a hurry
Off to war, off to kill
Some have died, maybe you will
Shrapnel flying, men are screaming
Praying to God to stop the bleeding
Dust swirls up, you step one pace
A fiery bullet screams past your face
Hit the deck, grab your cover
Oh, how you want the arms of your mother
The dust clears; someone's there
Reach for your gun, do you dare?
You look at him and see your face
A fellow member of the human race
He lifts his gun, pulls the trigger
You're one more body for the gravedigger
Sent back home in a body bag
To be wrapped in America's flag
