Part 3

“Sara you didn’t have to get so dressed up, it’s not a dinner party.”

Sara put on her lipstick and shrugged. “Well the way you described him I wanted to be prepared.”

The taxi stopped in front of a tall building. The two women stepped out and were greeted by the doorman.

“It’s an apartment building!” Gwen turned to Sara. “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.”

Sara grabbed Gwen’s arm. “Oh no! We are going inside. This is the first man in a very long time that has sparked interest, your interest and I am meeting him.”

As they walked in Gwen mumbled. “His artifacts sparked my interest.”

Sara rolled her eyes.

They rode the elevator to the top. Of course it had to be the penthouse. The doors opened and they stepped out into the hall. Gwen raised her hand to knock on the double doors then paused.

Sara sighed loudly and knocked herself. A few moments later the door opened. Brendan DeWolfe stood there and he hadn’t lost any of his dangerous good looks.

“Please come in.”

Yeah into his lair, Gwen thought. Sara stared at Gwen stunned and mouthed “Wow”.

“Mr. DeWolfe, this is Sara Martin.”

He shook Sara’s hand. “Please call me Brendan.”

Sara looked like she was ready to melt into a pile of goo as he led them into the living area.

“Would either of you like something to drink? I have white or red wine.”

“I’ll have white please.” Sara answered.

“I’m fine thank-you.” Gwen declined.

He left to go get Sara’s wine.

Sara went over to Gwen immediately and whispered frantically. “Oh my God! Gwen he is the sexiest man I’ve ever seen in my life! There’s this air of danger about him but it only seems to draw me closer. And those eyes!”

Gwen looked around the apartment. “I wonder where his artifacts are.”

Sara snapped her fingers in front of Gwen’s face. “Are you kidding me? That God is walking around and you’re worried over artifacts?”

“You shouldn’t drink the wine, incase he is trying to drug us!” Gwen said haphazardly as she continued to look around.

“Are you serious?” Sara groaned.

“I don’t like this, plus I don’t like the feeling he is giving me.”

He came back before Sara could say anything. He handed the wine to Sara.

“So Mr. DeWolfe, may I see your artifacts?” Gwen asked.

His blue eyes seemed to shimmer. “Of course, follow me, and please call me Brendan.”

Gwen just looked away from his gaze.

He led the pair down a hallway into another room. As soon as Gwen entered the room her mouth flew open. The room was large with several different artifacts displayed. The astounding thing was their condition, they were in pristine shape. Even Sara was impressed; she was looking at a tapestry that depicted the Norman Conquest.

“How did you come by such amazing finds?” Gwen asked awed.

He trailed behind her as she wondered around the room.

“Here and there, I travel a lot.” He answered vaguely.

Gwen finally stopped in front of a group of swords that hung on the wall. Most were not even in cases; her fingers ached to touch them so badly.

“They still have the jewels in them.” Gwen said breathlessly. She leaned closer to read the inscription on one. “Vengeance thy name.” She whispered.

Gwen gasped out loud when Brendan’s voice came from directly from behind her.

“The Bruce’s sword is over there.”

Gwen followed him down the wall a ways until they came to a sword that was in a case with a tartan wrapped partially around the handle. The plaque under the case simply said “King”. A new thought came to Gwen as she looked around the room again.

“How did you say you acquired all these artifacts?” She asked suspiciously.

He seemed to read her thoughts and smiled at her. “All honestly I assure you. Auctions mostly, from my family.”

A knock sounded and he turned away from her. “Excuse me ladies.”

When he walked out Gwen turned to Sara. “Museums would kill to have these in their collections!”

“The condition they are in is almost unbelievable.” Sara answered inspecting a coat of mail.

Gwen silently agreed with her.

Brendan reentered the room with another man.

“This is my business associate Lachlan Cameron.”

Sara and Gwen shook his hand. He was almost as tall as DeWolfe, but his hair was a dark red and instead of dark blue eyes his were deep brown. Gwen felt a sense of unease, Lachlan seemed to have the same air of danger about him, but he didn’t affect her the way DeWolfe did. Sara seemed to warm up to him right away. They began discussing the tapestry, while the swords drew Gwen back to them.

Gwen’s fingers itched to touch the cool steel. One of the swords toward the bottom caught her eye. There was a blood red ruby on the hilt. Down the blade something was inscribed but it was in Gaelic.

This time she felt him before he spoke.

“Though evil be around me, I am the darkness that consumes it.”

Gwen frowned. “Consumes, not destroys?” She felt his eyes on her, and turned to look up at him. “Consumes means you make it a part of yourself. Whoever owned this sword carried around the destruction he wielded with it, how sad.”

“Why sad?” he asked softly.

His gaze was starting to make shivers run up her spine. “He was probably just doing what he had to do to survive, but he was letting the evil slowly win because he let it become a part of himself.” Gwen could have sworn she saw his eyes deepen in color again. “He was probably just doing what he was born to do.” She finished breathlessly.

She couldn’t break away from his gaze, she felt as if he was looking into her soul. Then he seemed to mentally shake himself and stepped back and away from her. Gwen was shocked he was acting like he was afraid of her! She almost laughed then, she doubted he was afraid of anything; she must have been imagining things again.

He cleared his throat and looked back at her. “You got all that just from looking at the sword, huh?” He said lightly.

Gwen felt her face redden. “I like to make-up stories about where or who an artifact comes from.” She looked back at the sword. “I bet if this sword could talk it would be quite a story.”

He just smiled, but Gwen noticed it didn’t quite reach his eyes. Then something occurred to her, she tilted her head to the side. “You speak Gaelic?”

He nodded and shrugged. “My parents thought it would be important to know.”

She looked at him strangely, then looked back at the sword, she got closer to it again and noticed there was a family name on the hilt, “DeWolfe” it read. She stepped back surprised.

He simply looked at her. “Family heirloom.”

She couldn’t believe it. “Well do you know who owned it? The story behind the description?” She realized she sounded a little crazed, but damn how fascinating.

He stared at the sword and sighed. “I can honestly say my ancestors never told me anything about it.”

Gwen narrowed her eyes at him. She felt like there was something he wasn’t telling her.

Behind her she heard a crash of shattered glass. She turned around to see Lachlan catch Sara.

Sara’s eyes fluttered. “I am sorry I spilled the wine. I’ve just been so tired.” She said weakly.

Lachlan picked her up and carried her into the living room, laying her on the couch. Gwen knelt on the floor beside her and put her hand to her forehead, it felt a little warm.

“Sara honey, maybe you should go to the hospital.” Gwen said worriedly.

“I just need to sleep.” Sara mumbled with her eyes closed.

Gwen shook her a little bit. “Sara, I’ll take you back home, come on.” But she wouldn’t move. Gwen bit her lip, great now what? She looked up towards DeWolfe. He was talking quietly with Lachlan. Had Sara’s wine been poisoned? No, she had seen Sara give a sip to Lachlan when she was talking with him. Gwen stood up.

“Um, I think I’m going to call a cab and take her home.” Gwen said going for her cell phone.

“I have spare bedrooms; you and your friend can stay the night.” DeWolfe offered.

“Th, that’s alright, I think she just really needs to be at home right now.” No way was she staying the night at his place.

DeWolfe exchanged a look with Lachlan. “Well I’ll drive you.”

The way he said it left no room for discussion. DeWolfe picked Sara up and headed towards the door, and Gwen could do nothing but just follow him out.
