Written for Insomniac's Poetry Contest (About My Children)
I lay into my bed at night,
listening to the sounds,
the wind beat on my windows,
the leaves race cross the ground.

Gentle rain pours outside,
the furnace comes on, such a pest,
then suddenly I do hear,
tiny soft footsteps.

I uncover myself and sit up,
waiting and listening for it again,
instead I hear the outdoors,
whistling winds and more rain.

Climbing slowly back where I did lay,
resting yet once more,
I hear tiny soft footsteps,
and the squeaking of my door.

I sit back up and watch closely,
and tilt my head in the direction,
my daughter comes giggling in to me,
wanting to sleep near my affection.

She drifts away into sweet slumber,
laying her head upon my chest,
I lay back down next to her,
for I too deserve the rest.

Suddenly I hear small sounds,
soft footsteps coming down the stairs,
this time they come in two's,
the kids came down in pairs.

All running into my bed,
with a jump they make their way,
hogging all the pillows,
and blanket as they may.

Each one drifts slowly to dreaming,
I get up and shut my door,
when I awake to mornings light,
it's me who's on the floor.
