Written for "The Dialogue 500

“Mom… Mom? MOM!”

“What?”

“Mom, there’s a bat.”

“No, there isn’t. Now be quiet and go to sleep.”

“Yes there is, it’s flying around the ceiling.”

“Stop that. You’re just saying that because we were talking about bats earlier. Go to sleep.”

“No, I’m not. Mom, look, it keeps flying around in circles.”

“Connie, if you don’t be quiet and go to sleep, you’re going to get a spanking.”

“But, Mo-o-om. It really is. It’s flying around in circles on the ceiling. Maybe it’s rabid.”

“Grrr, Con-nie...” Gasp! “EEEk! Linford, Linford! There’s a bat in here! Wake up.”

“Wha...huh? What’s the matter?”

“It’s a bat! Connie, get under the covers. Linford, there’s a bat in here!”

“I see it. It’s just a little bat…"

"Linford!"

"Okay, okay. Stay in here... --- Okay, you can come out from under the covers, now.”

“Is it dead?”

“Yes. I’m going to get rid of it, now.”

“Wait, what did you hit it with? A badminton racket? Can I see it? Ooh, it looks like a little mouse with wings. Neat, it's cute. It has sharp little teeth, too. Can it turn into a vampire?”

“Connie! Get back in bed and go to sleep.”

“Okay. But I told you there was a bat, Mom.”

“Yes, you did. I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. Now go to sleep.”
