A family who leaves you out it the cold, and when it's realized, it's too late to fix.

Familial Regrets

I won’t be here forever
And one day when I’m gone
You’ll think of me and wonder
Why I won’t come back

Why didn’t you try harder?
To just talk with me?
Took advantage
Thought you did
Of all the wrong things

Promises were broken
Little things but just enough
To impress upon my memory like a handprint
One I can't scrub off

So looking back on me
On us
On this
On we?
Would you wish you could merely
Change the memories?
Go back and fix
To do what you didn’t then
Because I wish you could now
But I’ll be long gone by the time
You figure it out yourself

The time will come when I’m not here
When you can’t make me listen
And I won’t even want to
And better;
I won’t have to

So do you regret it now?
Or will you only think of it then?
When you’re fading and I’m looking back
On my memories with dread
When you will say ‘come visit me’
But I’ll make my excuses in its stead

And I’ll look back and remember
But always wish to forget
Will you be the same as now?
Or will you finally
Regret
