How poor Edna died in an asylum
Edna said it was the cats;
Their dirty claws breaking
Dark stones upon her breast
Laughing like dirty gypsies.

She said they took her heart
In ripped red ribbons;
Eating it on her best china,
Staining the bleached sheets.

So they would be back;
Black paws padding,
Stinking of Lysol and rubber straps,
Glinting little needle teeth.

Shadows swelled at Midnight,
With a roar of hungry purrs.
A last gasp as Edna ended with a whisper,
“Will it be liver tonight”?
