A walk to the local shops
On days like this
I am living on an island.
A disk of land painted in oils
Floating in open space on warm bright blue

There are slices of hot buttered toast
Wafting downs from the horse chestnuts
Spinning as they glide crisply
To the fertile, healthy earth

Walking to the shops is an event not to be missed
On days like this
All the time to feel the sun’s warmth
Soaking into the black of my jacket

It’s all around me all the time
Day by day is a cosmic event unfolding
The chocolate conkers,
The huge freight trains shaking the level crossing
The check out girl with sallow skin and gray eyes
And the hypnotic hiss of the gas fire.

I used to long to share all of this
Maybe I am already part of the sharing.
