This was inspired by the small flowers that I found in Iraq near the Euphrates.
Ogden Flowers

Far away from home
And surrounded by the sand;
This place is my home for a while,
This flower dotted piece of land.

This place is not beautiful…
Maybe just a little piece,
But at times reminds me of us,
I have that at the very least.

In this desolate place
Where nothing seems to grow,
I’ve learned one thing
That perhaps you didn’t know.

These flowers so strong
That stand as a pair;
Their tops so golden,
Just as your curled and flowing hair.

Patches of lavender flowing
As the breeze blows by,
Stained by the colors of sunset
Sent from a velvet desert sky.
These long stemmed soldiers
With helmets of lavender and gold
Stand shoulder to shoulder,
Outnumbered but bold.

A light breeze on my face
Offers me comfort for a while;
A lighter moment it gives me
As if I were a child.

I see you in my dreams
Yet awake all the while;
Staring into the horizon…
I can hear your smile.

They are my allies
Waving bravely in the wind,
In this place consumed by evil
They have no sin.

As we stand our post,
No comfort of a cool morning dew,
I wonder which of us stands watch,
And who is watching who.

They stand watch with me
And look so small.
These little sentries
Will outlast us all.

At day’s end
With the setting of the sun;
Still standing tall
Together, they have won.
