For my little boy who struggles with speech.
I whispered how I loved you
But received nothing in return
Though it was a gift you couldn’t give me
It was the reciprocal for which I yearned

But I’ve learned your kisses are Christmas
All warmth and pumpkin pie
And your smiles are rich hot cocoa
When snowflakes tumble from the sky

Your laugh is the vibration
Of song heard in a sacred place
And your touch a glowing firelight
To the cold and the displaced

Son, it is in silence that we love
But your eyes betray how it is you feel
And now a thousand and one I love you’s
Could never make your love more real
