Poem about heartache written for a contest. Prompt: A Softened Bed of Nails
                                        A Softened Bed of Nails

Why?
Why must I lie here
hour upon lonely hour
with nothing but doubt,
nothing but thoughts that sear
burning my heart and shriveling the flower
of love that must be cast out.

I lie awake into the early morning
wrestling night and day
with torturous passion and memories
that remind of how much I miss you
wishing it could work another way
my heart, tumultuous in the dark seas,
longs for us to begin anew.

I lie awake on this softened bed of nails
Pricked into reminiscence
Of those wonderful days we had
And pierced by the thought that they are no more
I can’t stand it much longer, ‘cause you are the essence
The core of my hope, my love, and my presence
