a villanelle on war, loneliness, and injusti

O, so lonely
When the fear grips you in its hands; there is no one to turn to
And all the world is dark and deadly.

When the hatred of so many
Shoots the life from your soul; there is nothing you can do,
O, so lonely.

When the night ends its reign of tyranny,
Yet the sky no longer turns blue
And all the world is dark and deadly.

When Death has no more meaning to me
For I have lost so many that I once knew
O, so lonely.

It is impossible to see
What years without love may do to you,
And all the world is dark and deadly.

Finally, one day, as the sun rises slowly,
All of this nightmare seems untrue,
O, so lonely

But still there is war, for the death of the needy
Still brings warmth to those who have nothing left to pursue.
O, so lonely,
And all the world is dark and deadly.
