For Liz.

For weeks I tried to hide my dread
behind a smile so insincere,
but had you looked hard at my face
my fright was there for all to see.

Be still my heart, you beat too fast.
Pray God this feeling does not last.

By day I walked as in a daze,
by night my dreams were wild and dire.
Imagination ruled my life
accompanied by fear.

Too many nights I lay awake.
How much I suffered for your sake.

Then as the day drew ever close
and time for change of mind was past,
I had to confront the unknown
and put my fear aside.

Dear one, my heart reached out to you.
My mind knew what I had to do.

Then came the hour, I prayed for calm
as on the journey I embarked.
It was too late to change my mind,
my feet had left the ground.

I flew to see you sister dear-
my love for you conquered my fear.

I flew for the first time last year. I conquered my fear of flying in order to go visit my sister in Cyprus who I hadn’t seen for 10 years.
