An observation on how close we all are to happiness, yet fall so short
So here we are again
seven steps from heaven and
can’t find the strength to draw a breath,
to carry onward,
to close the gap.

So here we fail again
seven sins from Hell and yet
we dare to commit them all,
to dance on pinpoints,
to seal our fate.

Why do we do this to ourselves?
Take our hearts down from the top shelf
and dust them off
only to be put back again
as if they were ever of any use to us in the first place.

Tear it down.
Bring the walls down around us and step for the first time forward.
Tear it down.
Bring down these concrete canyons and see the faces in the splinters,
in the glass that will rain down.
Bathe the world in it’s own reflection.
Let it see just how fractured it really is.

You close the curtains again
as they pass through the traffic lights outside.
Close your eyes to the collision you know is coming.
Hide inside your shell and pretend that everything is okay now.

Nothing is okay now.
Seven steps from heaven and we trip and fall.
Nothing is okay now.
Flat on faces that refuse to see
the broken hearts that litter the sidewalk and catch our feet.
Please catch me.
Seven steps from heaven and we tear it all down.
Seven sins from Hell and yet we tick them all away.
Tick them away.
Take me away.
Let me fall from the top shelf.
From the top floor falling through the cracks.
What good is a heart seven steps from heaven?
Just claw my eyes out and lay me down.
What good is a heart seven steps from heaven?
Just claw my eyes out and lay me down.
Just lay me down
Beside the road.
I got so close.
Seven steps from heaven.
My heart stopped beating.
Seven steps from heaven.
