Dedicated to the memory of Eudora Welty.
Striking Clocks

"I grew up to the striking of clocks," Eudora said.
Comfort found in eternal ticking.
Chiming tones to keep us from falling behind.
Commanding and asking us to fall silent and listen.
Leave, eat, go to bed, wake up.
Constant friends as well as foes.
Time is moving and you must too-- they would say.
Get along, got to work, on to school, time to sleep
But return so we can tell you tomorrow
To do the same thing.
