If I could have one more day with my dad.
"Happy Birthday Daddy! How's it going so far?"
"Good" you say as I get out of my car.
A hug, and a kiss and we walk inside,
and it's like you're here, and you never died.
"Let's go to the couch and relax awhile"
You say as you wink at me and smile.
"So tell me what's been new with you"
" I moved back home" but you already knew.
" I got a new job, how about you?"
"how's Heaven been treating you?"
Hours pass and it's time to leave,
so you walk outside to say good-bye to me.
and you stand there and wave till I can't see,
that's how you've always done for me.
One more day that's all I need,
I pray to God, I beg I plead.
Just one day that's all I ask,
to help me find peace with the past.
To walk with him like before,
to not feel guilty anymore.
To talk about life and everything,
a chance to relax, a chance to explain.
That I never meant to ever hurt you.
I didn't know what to do, I was trying to save you.
One more day hand in hand
one last chance to understand
so many things I need to say
all I need is one more day
not to fight and not to hate,
just to be forgiven for my mistake.
I understand why you chose not to stay
you were tired of living life this way
all I want, I need, is the chance to say
" I miss you Daddy, Happy Birthday".
