A poem in Memory of my grandfather.
This is something I felt I needed to write in memory of my grandfather who was a World War II Veteran who died back in 1983 of lung cancer. Every year about Memorial and Veteran's days I start thinking about what he would say about me and how I live my life.
So.......Without any further ado.

If You Were Here
______________________

As I stand at your grave.
I wonder 'if you were here
The words that you would say
That would fall on my humble ear

Would there be pride in that voice?
as you looked me in the eyes
saying in your heart and soul
That with my poems, an angel cries.

Would I be able to return your gaze
and say 'I am a man proud and true
I may not wear a soldiers clothes,
but my heart I get from you.

I hardy knew you when I was young.
I barely remember your face.
but now I see myself in you
as you stand here in this place.

Do you see a soldier man,
standing up for what is right
Fighting not with sw'rd or shield
but with writings in the night?

I tell you now, grandfather
That what I say is true.
A soldiers blood runs in my veins
and I owe it all to you.

Would you smile at that
as your ghostly form fades away
would I hear through the night
the final words that you would say.

"Son you've done me proud,
Bringing honor to our name.
Setting yourself above the rest
in this endless heavenly game.

Know this child of my blood
that one thing certain is true.
That as I sleep here in the night
my thoughts and prayers are with you."

Rest well grandfather
as I know in my heart you do.
Know well that I pray you're proud of me
and to that goal I'll be true.
