A college girl longs for a significant other.
one more step.
one foot in front of the other.
it's gonna be worth it, right?
left? right left right
onto the sidewalk from the street.
sweet.
i crossed it.
i'm not a frikkin dillo--

damn that stupid ringtone.
faceplant back into the pillow
while I press the snooze button
on my cellphone
so I can catch a few more z's...
thunder grumbles in the distance.
please be quiet, please.
curl right back under the covers
where it's nice and really warm
and safe.
safe?
always being the cautious one
the simple one
the quiet one
the one who hides in fear.
her heart locked up so well it's really not
too hard to tell
why guys don't want to come too near.
'we've got no chance in hell' -
so she won't fall and not be caught,
that's what she makes the right guys think.
her heart is all she's got.
the wrong guys see her as a challenge:
'oh, she'll bend for me
in just the time it takes to blink.'
don't bother blinking.
don't.
and when they finally see she won't
they turn around and leave.
that's what makes it so much harder
for her to believe.
now the thunder drowns the ringtone.
girl, the bed's still nice and warm.
stay inside and play it safe
while outside waits the storm.
while outside plays the rain...
while outside maybe waits a guy
who'll take away the pain.
maybe not for sure, but
you can't really stay inside forever.
try your hardest – try.
it's not like you won't ever
meet your perfect kind of guy.
run outside and dance and let the water
soak your face and hair and make your clothes
stick to your skin like tape
and laugh 'cuz you don't care.
the wind so cool and strong will be your wings
and lift your thoughts to other things
like plans and dreams and let your teeth grit out
a wide smile in the biting wind and shout how effing freezing
the weather is today.
tomorrow. wednesday.
thursday. friday. saturday. sunday.
effing monday again.
and still you'll be outside and effing dancing in the rain.

...but this time someone's there.
'cuz this time someone's braved the storm
to see what kind of crazy girl
is not inside her dorm.
with a what-the-hell-are-you-doing stare
and a smile that puts the sun to shame.

and he'll take it from there.
