A short piece about the Holocaust.
I would were the summer
Looking better than the spring.
But it's difficult to think
Of everything that's been.

Fog enclouds my vision
And my body fights the cold.
I would were the flowers
Feeling just a little bold.

I would were my stomach
Feeling just a little fed.
But three days have seen it empty
And I feel it in my head.

I saw a woman fall today.
Her nose and fingers bled.
I would were I not sharing
My blankets with the dead.

I would were it still easy
To close my eyes at night.
But fear will keep them open.
As evil masquerades in light.

I would sell my soul to hear again
My silent daughter sing.
I would were the summer
Looking better than the spring.
