Words for Creative Writing

Main References

• This is by no means all-inclusive of references that I use, but it should be adequate for general use. This applies to the lists within my "Words for Creative Writing folder.

• Many editors/publishers sneer at Wikipedia referenced resources due citations that are often missing, however it is good for general reference and as a springboard to other web and book resources. Therefore, I use it liberally.

• Some pages may load with images and/or textual references not suitable for young viewers or sensitive viewers with conservative or strict cultural, dietary or faith-oriented backgrounds. Such pages are few and every effort has been made to limit intensity of exposure for reference use only. Utilize links at your own discretion.)

• Please e-mail me if a link is not working so I can update it or delete it. Thanks!

Food Resources:
---Particular food and drink items should be researched individually as they may or may not be included in the region and timeframe intended. For example: Pomegranates are indigenous to Persia (Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran) and were known in ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom period (1540–1070 BCE), any earlier timeframe than that for Egypt would be considered suspect.

Books by Sir A.E. Wallis Budge1
 Author's Thoughts: Budge's books have been around for over 100 years and are still in print and circulation. Some controversy exists, skeptical2 of Dr. Budge's work. Is it still valid with today's new discoveries? How much needs to be updated? New blood has entered the field. New blood burning with questions, new analyses being done, which makes for a less romantic approach to reasoning the meaning and the fates of such a remarkable people.
Archaeology is now over 100yrs old as a science. In the early days the focus was on fame garnered for discovering golden treasures, while the collections of foreign museums and the wealthy fattened with shimmering relics. The mummies (if they had artifacts with them), the architectural ruins and the stories deciphering the hieroglyphs could tell took an inferior position to the gold. Decoding steles, walls, and papyri endured a persistent "Victorian eye" to propriety and decency among the words (and images) – as seen in Budge's books and other's work from the period. Not to dismiss the work, but even in Howard Carter's3 day a lot of "romance" and "intrigue" was injected into reports and documents from those early days to massage the public's favor. To be fair, there was the archaeologist who honestly believed their own "deduced" stories (albeit rumors abound with hurried presumptions so they could move on to the next golden project). Then there was the press of the day with its dubious journalism.
These days more science, technology and logic is going into what "really" happened in the lives of the ancient Egyptians. We WANT to know what the "little guy" thought and did. More attention is being paid to pottery sherds, trash heaps, and once-buried deserted towns erected for then-national building projects. Then again, there's always excitement where discoveries are concerned, who wouldn't be untouched by tingles and romance?
My opinion is that much of Dr. Budge's work is relevant and worthwhile (even if some of it needs to be back-tracked and verified to today's findings).
