My friend and I each write a poem in 5 minutes. Each week it's a different theme.
Did you ever stop and really think
Why the salmon is so pink?
Or why the chicken is so tender?
I’d tell my Gran, but it might offend her.

The steak on our plate is so lean
But how it got there is so mean.
It was probably all interbred
Then fattened up in a big shed.

Chicken goes so nice on a barbie,
But it had a happy life? I think hardly.
It didn’t see the light of day
Until it got to the supermarket tray.

Even the tomatoes are so fat and round
But deep inside I’m sure chemicals are found.
They say to keep the insects away,
But what if it messes with our DNA?

So next time we’re pushing the supermarket trolley
In anticipation of filling our belly,
Let’s give a thought for all those that are dead
Before reaching for our daily bread.
