Here's my thoughts on why I fast and what it feels like.
That rumble in my stomach
That pain of thirst
My body saying: “Just one bite.”
“Surely it won’t hurt”.

But my soul saying: “No
I’m doing this for my Lord
The One who gives me the food to eat,
The One who I adore.”

He sent the Qu’ran down,
To help me believe
That I am here for a reason
That there is no reason to grieve

My stomach gets no food
My throat gets no water
But my soul has the best nutrient of all
And I think that is better.

It’s my faith that wakes me up before dawn
Out of my comfortable bed,
It’s my faith that makes me eat some food
Even though I don’t need to be fed.

It’s my faith that makes me pray to Allah
And thank Him for the world
It’s my faith which helps me through the day
And thank Him for my life.

I look at the sky and see the sun go down
Alhamdulliah, I take my first bite
Prostrating again to Him one more time,
I thank Him again for helping me keep up the fight.

So when my body says: “One more bite.”
My soul shakes its head and says: “No,
“I’m doing this for my Lord,
Fasting is my food, and that’s my only goal.”
