A light poem written for Amanda, who was always good company and conversation.
I have hired a librarian for my soul
as I have been barred from the Akashic Record
pending repayment of some rather hefty late fees

She is physically young and quite pretty
in a bookish sort of way
Thick-rimmed glasses and silent, darkly shining eyes
impalpably soft skin
voice like the warm hum of an electric blanket
on a rainy autumn evening

Mentally she is beyond her years
in the jaded understanding of Buddhist middle age

Spiritually she is older than time
Emotionally she is as yet unborn

Her qualifications include a Master’s in Microveganomics
and a prior stint helping people confront parts of themselves
dark, hidden, liberating parts of themselves

So far she is working out well
She has no trouble locating the most inaccessible of my tomes
my Ethics and Poetics of Aristotle, my al-’Azif
my Best Erotic Lithographs of the Vatican Library

I have tried to entice
induce
coax
and force
her to read selections from my favourite Ĺ“uvres

Although I have met with little success
I am quite happy with the new librarian I have hired.
