When dreams overtake you body and mind.
Fear invades sleep with torturous images,
I run, yet go nowhere, destined to lose ground.
Silent screams strain from a sore throat, seeking help.
Heart thumps a drum roll of terror within my chest.

Body tangled in sheets, thrashes, begging escape,
subconscious overtaken by random events.
Knife chases, glaring blade, whispering childhood name,
contorting bats eating my brain for redemption.

Faces float around me with tongues of snakes escaping.
My legs swallowed by insects, pulling me into earth.
I search for reassurance in any common sight,
only distorted figures flood my fretful view.

Wake me.  This can’t be real! Rescue me from slumber.
Mother, protector, sense my torture from devils within.
Save my mind from rodent’s relentless hunger.
Sanity is slipping, shake me awake ‘fore all is lost.

Sweat pours down frightened face, wet with salty tears.
Jerking about to escape my own inexplicable creation.
Sleep, my enemy, mocks my struggle for salvation.
Panic pops eyes open, praying never to close again.

I came across another writer on here that suffers from night terrors as well.  Her piece is wonderfully written.  It depicts the horror and frustration felt.  Please check it out.
