Won Honorable Mention in 100 Words No Repeats contest, October 2008
Mum's favourite saying annoyed us: “Carrots will help you see better in the dark; we should eat them every single day.”

Her relentless advice seemed irrelevant, even ridiculous. Why would I want to have supreme eyesight at night? What may be perceived within complete darkness that makes consumption of disgusting orange vegetables worthwhile? My taste buds can only take so much abuse, and this particular foodstuff is just not acceptable.

Naturally, Dad supported me, disagreeing with his wife’s assertion, which he called a stupid old myth. But guess whose plate was always clean as each evening’s meal reached its end?
