SLEEPLESSNESS OVER BAD NEWS
AWAKE

Another night...as Sleep slips in and slips out...mostly out
My dreams, condensed, compete with consciousness...and lose
The race to the center of my mind... missing little..but shout
The silent shout of dreams arriving in second place..angry, hot
So I arise in darkness refusing to lie and referee the fight
Between consciousness and not.

In my quiet room in my quiet house where quiet rules
My feet find their patient slippers waiting for another
Round of up and down..shuffling...not shuffling..
Take me to the tube of fools...teller of bad news
The world completed one more turn with no improvement
For many people of many hues.....

And again my quiet house...and slippers and the loser dream
Fighting consciousness not even to a draw
Is unimportant in this scheme
That networks decided that I saw
The lives cut short...fortunes cost.
The world's is less as yesterday was lost
To many

But a new day starts my slippers slipping
Back up the stairs slow apace
Where they rest patiently in their place
Satisfied to leave the bad news heard
Over the sound of hot tea sipping
And resting until again consciousness defeats the dream
Tea is sipped to the sound of bad news.
