A poem of mythical proportion.
Got this story I heard sometime back
From a friend of a friend, or something like that
Once upon a New Year’s eve, a long time ago
Some people were witness to a really righteous show
The weather was cold but the crowd was hot
They were all fired up but the band was not
The headliner had phoned they were still in Cleveland
The singer had the flu, or whatever the reason
The opening band just split for a gig across town
All the good players were nowhere to be found
The mob was anxious and they called for the next act
Some were shouting they wanted their money back!
Time was getting late and no music was playing
If something didn’t happen soon the people weren’t staying
All of a sudden the lights went dim and a spot light popped
It got so quiet you could hear a pin drop
Four figures stood on stage right out of thin air
Just a minute before, they weren’t there
Music started up and the crowd got on their feet
A cheer went out over the heavy bass beat
A dude at the mike announced he was J.C.
And the guys behind him were the Wise Guys 3
One guy was on the kit, another on sax
They had a stand-up bass, JC had a wide-body axe
They had a great sound and covered all the hits
They even played a few numbers of their own mix
As the night wore on they fell into a groove
Rhythm and blues never sounded so smooth
At midnight they paused to ring in the year
Then played a slow tune to dance with someone dear
The music went on ‘til the wee hours of the morning
You’d never thought the evening started so boring
Round about dawn they thanked the crowd
With a step back they all took a bow
The people clapped, shouted and cheered
Then just like that the band disappeared
Now I understand there in that hall
A good time was had by all
I don’t know if that really happened
I wasn’t there, as you might imagine
Stories get told sometimes by fools
But this one actually sounds pretty cool
Do be aware for when you expect it least
You too could be witness to a historic piece
Like the night long ago when people got to see
Ol’ J.C. play with the Wise Guy 3.
