A Children's story, written in Lyric.
Up In A Tree
By David A. Chalfant

Up in a tree.
That’s where I’d be,
If I could jump higher,
At least two feet or three.

Then, I’d catch a branch,
And because I’m so strong,
I could pull myself up.
It wouldn’t take long.

Then, oh, just imagine
How great it would be!
I could chat with the birds!
I could see what they see!

And they might invite me to live in their tree.

Up in a tree?
Yes, I suppose I could stay,
And live for a while.
Or at least for a day.

But, if I was to live there
For even one night,
I’d need a few things
To make it just right.

First, I would need
My new puppy, named Joe,
Because he would get lonely
If I left him below.

So, I’d have to invent,
With a bucket and string,
A special puppy elevator-swing
Kind of a thing.

Then, after that,
I’d need some place to eat.
So, I’d build me a kitchen.
I’d make it so neat!

I’d bring up a table,
And I’d bring up a chair,
And I’d put the refrigerator
Right over there!

And when I was finished,
I’d call the birds to come see.
And to be polite,
I’d invite them to share dinner with me.

I’d make cereal for dinner.
It would be such a treat!
I make the best cereal,
‘cause I make it extra sweet!

Then, after dinner,
I’d have to hurry,
So I could finish my tree home
Before the daylight gets blurry.

I would gather up sticks.
I would gather a lot.
Then, I’d find lots of leaves,
And I’d pile them on top.

And I’d bring up a blanket,
And I’d make me a bed.
And I’d bring my favorite pillow
To put under my head.

And all of the birds
Would come over-- and then,
We’d stay up telling stories
‘Til nine-thirty or ten.

Then I’d curl up with Joe,
And all the rest of my guests.
Everyone would agree,
That my nest is the best!
