A poem based on the events of the past few months of my life and one possible outcome.
In the morning,
Men are strong,
Men are brave,
Men are proud.

With joy in their eyes
And hearts filled with hope,
Men say their goodbyes
And journey on.

And when triumphantly they return,
They expect to see
A brighter dawn,
A better tomorrow.

In the afternoon,
Men are lonely,
Men are tired,
Men are lost.

But still they push forward,
Knowing there is no way out.
Not yet ready to leave,
But longing to be home.

The glowing torch flickers,
Fading to black.
They only count the days
'Till their weary hearts can rest.

In the night,
Men are beaten,
Men are broken,
Men are torn.

Lives lay strewn across the ground,
Some starving, some bleeding, some dying.
They no longer know
If they will ever see home again.

Their faith is gone.
Hopeless, they dream.
A vision of home
Before they whisper their final goodbyes.
