My first attempt at free-form poetry. A story of someone left behind.

The Final Fight

I never thought this day would come so soon,
I thought we had forever together.

Now the silence you have left behind burns a hole in my heart.
You leave behind a hollow, empty shell; void of the organs that used to play here.

How can this be a farewell? You in your vivid lack of colour,
A shock to the senses that cannot comprehend

You were always the one to silence a room, but never like this
Your voice, a soft, deafening whisper of love
Enveloped my ears, my eyes, my heart
Whispered to them to shout out loud, but only for you to hear

Only you could ever hear
I sit here now, screaming in silence – for your ears only.
But now, even your ears are deaf to my sobs

Your beauty amazed me. Even in the dark, your eyes shone,
Illuminating the path to your heart with such light,
I was never lost when you were there.

The darkness shied away from your heart, and left us in our own special light
The light only our eyes could see, the multi-coloured whiteness,
How I long to be blinded by your beauty now

Our love, the victory march for lovers, now with a single lover, soldiering on

Through the darkness where now there can be no light
Through the silence where now there can be no sound
Through the life where now there can be no living

This soldier wants no more. Wants to escape her captors,
The captor of your eyes, holding me to ransom if I dare to think of joining you

But I cannot live without you. You will not allow me to join you,
Your memory won’t let me rest. I feel my heart has stopped beating,
So dead, it beats out of my chest.

Why can I not finish this, once and for all?
Have the final fight and come off the loser?
Then you can illuminate my life with your eyes,
And fill my silence with your colours once again.
