I wrote this poem while wondering whether anything would happen with my current boyfriend.
The Box

An old man gave me a box
long ago
Small, brown, locked
I didn't know what was inside
and the box wouldn't budge, though I tried

I wanted to know
I wanted to see
I wanted to know

So I pushed

An old man gave me a box
long ago
but he didn't give me a key
'That' he said 'was for someone else'
I'd have to wait and see

I wanted to know
I wanted to see
I wanted to know

So I pushed

I peeked through the keyhole
long ago
Small, black, dark
Then little by little some colours appeared
and then there were glittering stars

I wanted it opened
I wanted to see
I wanted the colours that swirled
But try as I might that lock wouldn't budge
and the keys that I found wouldn't work

I wanted to know
I wanted to see
I wanted to know

So I pushed

I found the old man from
long ago
and I asked him why it was stuck
He told me 'just wait'
he knew of that key
and smiled 'it's not far til it comes'

I wanted to know
I wanted to see
I wanted to know

So I stopped

I took that brown box and I gave it right back
to the old man who had given the key
'You know what it is, and you've seen clear the key
Would you hold this for me for a time?'

He smiled at me
and pulled out the key
'We've been waiting for you all along.'
