Unrest

Night has long fallen,
Stars gleam in the sky.
A warm breeze blows,
And crickets sing a sweet lullaby.

Alas, for me no sleep comes;
My mind a dervish whirling.
With melancholy deep and low,
I stare into the dark.
My innocence lost forever.

Distant memories approach;
Unbidden images rise to minds eye.
Black regret swallowed,
Pain choked down,
Sorrow enough to fill the void.

Bitter tears weep from mine eyes.
Alone, trapped in the past,
A soul cries for escape.
The heavens bear no witness,
As silent emotions rage.
