A Horse in my Backyard

A HORSE IN MY BACKYARD

If I had a horse in my backyard,
I’d give it all my time

And either ride or watch it
Til horses were a crime.

I’d take my fingers off the keyboard
And wrap them round my reins,

Remove them from the printed page
And tangle them in manes.

I’d lift my feet off hardwood floors
And slip them stirrup bound,

Then hunker on a leather throne
And ride my horse around.

If I had a horse in my backyard
I’d live in the outdoors

With hoof and hock and withers
While my heart forever soars.
