Religious poem for contest entry :)
Tell Me About The Sky

Tell me about the sky,
Said the boy who would never see
As he held on to your hand

And you wonder if he
Could have asked you a harder question:
Describe ‘blue’, ‘endless’, ‘beautiful’
To someone who will never know the sun

Except as a brush of warmness against his face.

So you start:
And it was so—God called the expanse “sky”
And there was evening
And there was morning

Even though you know a lot about
Air pressure and light rays and particles
Things that you can never hold in your hand
Or see with your heart

Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky
And let them serve as signs to mark
The seasons and days and years
And God saw that it was good

You tell him, so that
Later, when you struggle with words like
Brilliant, blazing, infinitely blue
His first memory of the sky

Will be of the one who came
To be a light for the world
To lift up the poor and the broken
To forgive us all

Of the power and the glory
The majesty and awe
As boundless as the sky above

And the love
The love that fell from his hands
