A poetic euphemism for a desperate, unfulfilled existence.

It draws you near
As you grow thin;
It changes you,
And sucks you in.

You chase a dream,
A means to an end;
And wear a disguise,
So you can pretend.

Hiding in shadows
To avoid their gaze;
You keep a secret,
Behind heavy haze.
