When I was 5 I almost drowned.
DROWNING

This story may be a figment of my five-year-old imagination. But,

readers, I remember the details vividly. I was very little with

blonde or strawberry blonde hair. My eyes were the same brown they

are today at age 11. I was in kindergarten and I experienced the

worst fright of my life. One hot weekend day, I begged my dad to

take me and my older sister, Thea, to the pool. He said "yes".

As we walked to the pool, I could feel the sun's heat against my back.

Not a lot of people were there swimming. the pool was filled with

shimmering, turquoise tiles and, the water was very warm. I had my

pink noodle. My dad and sister jumped right in. I started by wading

in the shallow end.

I was five and I couldn't swim which is why I had my noodle

and my dad for support. I remember his cell phone ringing. It

didn't ring often so I assumed it was my mom calling from work.

When he got out I was in the water. Off my noodle. All I saw was my

dad's giant-like figure and the sun's brilliant rays of light. The

only thing I heard was the bubbles that took my breath and my dad's

enormous splash into the water. In a split second I was on the

burning hot cement. People stared and gawked. After my rescue, I

spent a good ten minutes hugging my towel and coughing up water,

while trying to breathe through my sobs.

Because of this story, fiction or reality, my dad will always be my

hero. I am also proud to say I swim now without a noodle.
