As a lover of reading both fiction and poetry I began to write in the 1970's.
No boat or raft,
Or seaworthy craft,
Could tempt me out to sea,
I, on my island, feel in touch
With the center part of me.

Here, surrounded on all sides,
Yet separate, unattached
Undefined, the sea, like time,
Defied the nets that catch.

And though I don’t know where I am,
I am not lost, I swear,
For I have light on the darkest night
And freedom from all fear.

And though alone I feel no loss,
For I have more than most,
I have myself, the universe,
And peace, my constant host.

So, no shadow need I be,
No barnacle or vine,
I sip the cup of freedom,
The fresh air is my wine.

Whoever finds this message,
Don’t shed a tear for me,
Just take heed, your soul may need,
An island in the sea
