A kind of love poem
If I could lean back against my chair
In that sleepy stretchy way that feels so right
And write the kind of poetry that drips through my mind when I’m with you
I’d have enough to last me
Through the days and the doubts.
Flannel shirts and sneakers; you’re a pile of leaves to me
That we rake together
Just to scatter back across the grass, holding hands as we dive
Bare feet in the cold
With a wind that reminds you of apples
And words like brisk.
You and me are marshmallows
On fire in the house
With a mug of hot chocolate
And snow melting in our hair.
You’re spring and you’re summer
Pools and flowers and sidewalks covered in rain
Heat lightning accessorizing the sky.
You and me are now
Socks and drizzle
Sleepy smiles and tiring things
Songs that play in my life
Where every line sings of you
No matter the words.
You’re my season you’re my year
My month and my week
My day
You’re the moment that I catch
Skipping from the sky
On a red mittened hand
A moment that melts
With always another to follow.
