An old man's lament while watching children at play. Written as a song for a play.
What Can It Be About Children (song)

What can it be about children that brings tears to an old man’s eye?
Is it something he remembers of a day that’s passed him by?
Can he see in the sunlight that plays upon their hair
the long forgotten meadows and times without a care?

Is it the music in their laugh
that pulls upon his heart?
Is it the trust within their eyes
that shows him what he’s lost

What can it be?

What can it be about children that can make an old man smile?
Can he see that there’s a promise that makes dreaming all worthwhile?
Can he see in the wonder that is shining on their face
the hope that they may nourish all the dreams that he let fade?

Is it the music in their laugh
that pulls upon his heart?
Is it the trust within their eyes
that shows him what he’s lost

What can it be?

The time will be when it’s my turn to shed an old man’s tears
and I can’t help but to wonder; how many dreams will fill those years
Will I see my dreams forgotten like the autumn’s falling leaves?
Or one memory still burning of the things that I believe

Is it the music in their laugh
that pulls upon his heart?
Is it the trust within their eyes
that shows him what he’s lost

What can it be about children?
