This is my first novel, and we'll see what happens
She walked across the room, mumbling to herself.

"What am I going to do?" she said.

"How many times is this going to happen to me?"

The phone suddenly rang, and she jumped.  She had been lost in thought.  The hairs on the back of her neck stood up.  A shiver went down her back.  She registered the blaring ring, but brushed it off.

"Oh, I just don't have energy to talk to anyone, right now," she said.
