A long poem in the style of a letter received from outer space.
Dear sir or madam, I am writing to you,
To voice my concern at the things you do,
The Universe has been watching the Human Race,
And we find your society quite a disgrace.

Personally I have been watching down,
At your complex species wandering around,
When I first saw the way you live, I recoiled,
Earth was once beautiful but now it is spoiled.

From city to city, and nation to nation,
I am shocked at the complete lack of imagination,
Poets and artists are in slow decline,
In a place where idiocy is allowed to shine.

You had so much potential, look what you've become,
A man's emotions can be bought for a sum,
The poor stay hungry, while the rich will feed,
A world built on hate and greed.

You are empty, you have lost your soul,
Brainwashed by those in control,
What you must eat, What you must drink,
What you must say, What you must think.

You all look alike, like Trafalgar Square pigeons,
Bigotry and hate consume your religions,
Faith has become a collection of lies,
A man of another belief is a man you despise.

You seek a reward for being kind,
You let media men corrupt your mind,
Controlling everything that you're seeing,
Diluting the ideas of a human being.

Love and peace never make a good story,
Reality television is modern day glory,
Individuality has been lost through the years,
Trying your best to be like your peers.

Spending your time in an ocean of stress,
Your appearance causing you great distress,
Are you too fat? Are you too thin?
But you don't seem to care about what lies within.

Your most important worries are trivial things,
On a planet where fools can indeed be kings,
You have no excuses for the way you behave,
Whether mindless bigot, or corporate slave.

What are you humans actually living for?
As it seems to me it's only money and war,
It's hard to understand from here up above,
How you  continue to survive with so little love.

You can destroy fellow countries with the flick of a switch,
You hunt animals to extinction to make yourself rich,
You pollute your air and poison your seas,
You are violent to others with alarming ease.

I believe all hope is lost but maybe I'm wrong,
For there is still beauty in nature and song,
But I'm afraid I can't escape the clear conclusion,
That you're destined to live in fear and confusion.

I truthfully hope that you understand,
These words are meant to be a helping hand,
And hopefully awake you from your sleeping state,
To the plight of your world before it's too late.

I know that you will no doubt choose not to listen,
And continue your lives with your minds locked in prison,
But I truely hope that you can set yourselves free,
All the best, Your sincerely, E.T.
