This poem represents my feeling toward what Black America is and what it is not.
What it means to be Black
is not what I see.
It is not your shiny cars
or money or apple bottom jeans,
it is not your scantily clad women
or crack cocaine,
it is not sagging pants or
talking with a slur.
To be Black is freedom!
It is the struggle to be equal
and respected for our brains
and not for the fear we place
in the hearts of ignorant
White America.
To be Black is to be proud
of our country, our heritage
and to never accept the boundaries
and chains we place on ourselves.
To be truly Black is to choose to step
out of the box, to seek better lives for
future generations.
I refuse to accept the ignorance we
place on our own lives because
I am Black America!
