Awaiting the return of my love while watching the sun set over the lake
I stroll alone watching the day
sink into red and black rolling peaks.
Footprints display a memory where lovers ambled
toes barely touching the sand as they
float side by side.
Bright white flickers on the rolling peaks
as angels emerge to watch over
the maker of new footprints on the beach.

I stroll alone forgetting the day
that has become a mirror of rolling peaks.
I let my memories sink into the
black crevices between the waves,
forgetting the loneliness of the hours that elapse
between loving you from a distance, and
holding your hand.

I stroll watching the night
turn into a field of endless rolling peaks,
following the line of single footprints
back to the place where our footprints first began,
where I began,
and where we continue.

I stroll alone forgetting the night
dissolving my mind in the sadness of the rolling peaks,
waiting for the dawn of the day
when you return to make footprints
next to mine.

I stroll alone forgetting the night
and the lonely day that sank into sparkling rolling peaks
almost home – almost asleep – almost tomorrow
when we will walk together.

I stroll alone forgetting the day,
and forgetting the night and the rolling peaks,
and the crevices in between.

I stroll alone watching the day
sink into red and black rolling peaks.

I stroll alone while the sun sets.
