A Petrarchan Sonnet to a younger lover.
The thought that you and I will part someday,
That younger lips than mine will kiss your lips
As hands of lesser skill caress your hips
And on your be some newer man does lay,
That thought should make me weep and go away
And let the words of love escape my lips
No more, they are a subtle snare that trips
me into saying things I should not say.
And yet, my love, the sheer delight I find
In loving you each day without a care
And knowing that right now at least you love
Me banishes all worry from my mind.
At night alone I think of us and dare
To dream we two as one will fly above.
